Why redirect?

Google does a fantastic job of finding your site by name.

However, if you're interested in being found for other things besides your own name, it's important to have links. If your page on widgets is available at both yourdomain/widget.html and www.yourdomain/widget.html, people might link to both.

This has the effect of diluting your "link juice", splitting it between the pages. Which means you get fewer visitors.

And that's probably not what you want.
